2007 DeCEMBER
This was an evening of recitals, dance and general reverie upstairs at, where else, Bar italia. I had to leave early so didn't capture all there was to take. A good time was had by all!

Meet our gite, La Rabolière,the nearest big town, La Ferté St. Aubin and our village, Ménestreau-en-Villette. The flowers are from the gite's garden.

Simply the biggest equestrian centre we've ever seen. We suspect it's twice the size of Spruce Meadows in Calgary.
This is a chateau I've always wanted to see. It's truly beautiful!

I was surprised at how much light there was inside the Cathedral. Notre Dame in Paris is really dark in comparison. We were also surprised at how empty the Chateau was. It was nothing like Chenonceau or Versailles.

The square in Orléans is named after Charles de Gaulle but the statue in the middle is of Joan of Arc. Nice town!

Chambord is special. At night, there is a sound and light show at the chateau depicting the history of Chambord. Images are projected against the back walls of the Chateau and they're quite impressive.

The neighbour at the Gite has a Peacock. It showed up one morning and sauntered around as if it owned the place. Apparently it only eats brioche.
Chateau Chambord is a most amazing place. The grounds are huge; it's set in a Domain of about 4,000 hectares, of which about 800 are open to the public. The chateau is huge, very photogenic and, on a warm summer's day, a real treat to visit.

Boy, it was a sad day when we had to leave the Gite. We had such a wonderful time and the Owner was so nice! She cut some roses for us from her garden and they lasted the whole time we were in Paris. I've annotated many of the pics to show you where we were and what we were doing (probably as much for me as for you).
Our first full day in Paris was windy and rainy but we had to walk and what better thing could we do but follow the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. we walked seemingly forever, then climbed 668 steps to the Tower's second level. After walking back to our hotel we were pooped!
So this is the Champs Élysées. Cool!
What can one say about Versailles!? It's truly spectacular. The Hall of Mirrors was, for me, one of the most electrifying moments of the trip. I've heard about it and seen the pictures of it but to see it with the sun streaming in through the windows, lighting up the gold-coloured fixtures in the room, is quite unlike anything I've ever experienced.
The Louvre was awesome and as big as they say. Didn't shoot any of the galleries; I was too impressed with the sanctity of the place. That night we shot the Eiffel Tower. It was a warm night and, as you can imagine, the Champs de Mars was full of tourists like us, with the same idea.
What can one say about a church that's been a part of Paris since construction started in the 1100s. Mere words pale into insignificance when it's seen up close. Enjoy!
We passed by the Musée Rodin on our first day in Paris, walking home from the Eiffel Tower but were too tired to go in. So, we're back. "The Thinker" is here, in a garden setting. It was a nice day and the Eiffel Tower was close so we went back to try to get some better shots than we had gotten before. Finally, we encountered people picnicing on the Pont des Arts Friday night. We'd read about it and there it was. It was simply delightful!
So this was it, our last full day in France! The Musée d'Orsay was lovely and had some of our favourite impressionist paintings. We discovered the Paris Plage along the right bank of the Seine. It's a make-believe beach, with sand, beach towels, sunbathers and the like. Finally, took a few last pics of rue Buci and rue Dauphine, the noisy, crowded pedestrian streets surrounding our hotel and, of course, rue Grégoire de Tours on which our hotel is located.
